Howard Gray has been captivated by the marine ecosystems and rich maritime history of "the Abrolhos" since his first visit in 1980. Through diving and exploring trips and delving into the scientific research material and historical archives, he has built up a considerable knowledge of this amazing archipelago.
Investigating the rock lobster fishery for his Ph.D, and the life of Frederick de Houtman for the 400th anniversary of the discovery of these islands, has extended his research. He has actively contributed to many organizations, including the Abrolhos Islands Consultative Council and as a founding member and Chair of the Batavia Coast Maritime Heritage Association and the Batavia Coast Foundation.
He is the author of several award-winning maritime-themed books and has been acknowledged at local and State levels for his community service. His passion for this remarkable location and knowledge of the Islands' changing moods and seasons is shared in radio segments, articles and as a tour guide and guest lecturer.
